Red Rock Canyon : Located just 12 miles from Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon covers 198,000 acres. The hiking trails shown in these photos will take you to natural and cultural areas that you would never expect to find so close to a large city. When you visit Las Vegas, a hike through Red Rock Canyon can help you work off the buffets.

12/18/08: This week Las Vegas experienced the heaviest snowfall in 30 years. Early yesterday morning, I managed to reach Red Rock Canyon precisely when the snow stopped and the clouds parted.

Christmas Tree Pass & Grapevine Canyon : If you are looking for a nice day-trip from Las Vegas, try a back road that connects Searchlight and Laughlin, NV. The road, called Christmas Tree Pass, travels through the desert high-country and ends at Grapevine Canyon. A year-round stream that runs through the canyon and once quenced the thirst of the Paiutes. The Paiutes must have liked this place since their drawings decorate the canyon’s wall. You can see these drawings in my Petroglyph gallery. You can reach Christmas Tree Pass on US 95 a few miles south of Searchlight. It is a dirt road but easily navigable. If you prefer paved roads, drive towards Laughlin on US 163. Shortly before you reach Laughlin, you will see on a dirt road labeled Grapevine Canyon. The canyon is just a few miles off the highway.
