Highland Games
The Highland Games originated from Ireland in 2000 BC and then spread across the water to Scotland in the fourth and fifth century. The games are contests of strength and were used as a means of selecting the most able men for soldiers and couriers. My photos capture a few of the games. They include the Scottish hammer throw, sheaf toss, weight throw, stone put and caber toss. The Caber toss is perhaps the signature event. Competitors toss a 20-foot-long caber (a large log), which normally weighs around 150lbs.
Highland games take place almost everywhere in Scotland each year. The largest in the US began in 1956 at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina. Here in Las Vegas, trials for athletic competition are held at Craig Ranch Park. Afterwards, a Celtic Festival, that includes games, bagpipe competition and dancing, is held at Floyd Lamb Park. Having photographed several of these events, I was invited to join the Las Vegas Celtic Society. Although I am not Scottish, my grandmother was Irish which qualities me as a Celt.
