Death Valley Blooms
Less than 2 inches of rain a year usually falls on Death Valley, and during some years, there is no rain. From July 2004 through March 2005, however, Death Valley received 6.3 inches of rain: the most in the 94 years in which records have been kept. The record rains have transformed the barren Valley into a carpet of wildflowers: desert golds, brown-eyed evening primroses, gravel ghosts and desert stars. I was fortunate to see and photograph these flowers during their brief and rare appearance.
